Heckyl’s Social Media Heatmap helps beat the Indian Market Mayhem

Posted on Updated on

tweetGlobal jitters headed by China on concerns of economic slowdown in the world’s fastest growing economy , led to tremors in the financial markets across the globe. China’s equity market went through a roller-coaster ride in the last six months touching a peak of 5122 on June 6, surging 66 percent in a very short span of time. The stock market bubble finally busted and the index closed near 3000, losing over 40 percent in last three months.

A series of events propelled investors to move their funds out of emerging stock markets including India , on Monday, 24 August 2015 and the Sensex plunged 1400 points lower recording third worst intraday fall in the history of the Indian market. Below is the highlight of these events for the fall:

  1. Fed minutes showed officials divided over whether to increase rates in September.
  2. China devalued Yuan – China may not maintain 7% GDP growth – Investors low on confidence.
  3. Brazil market plunged to its 10yr low on the concerns of ongoing political crisis.
  4. Tensions between North and South Korea led investors to take money out of South Korea. The Korean stock market touched fresh 5-year low.
  5. Greece PM Alexis Tsipras resigned and called for an early election.
  6. Chicago Board Options Exchange volatility index was up 46%.
  7. Tensions between North and South Korea led investors to take money out of South Korea – equity markets at a 5 year low.
  8. Signs of investors fleeing to safety as bond markets witnessed a rally besides all safe haven instruments like Gold, Swiss Franc and Japanese Yen trading on the positive side.

Could this fear and frenzy have been captured for any possible indications? Fortunately, Yes. Social media posts tracked by Heckyl moved the sentiments for stocks, from the positive sentiment band in the beginning of last week , to an utterly negative zone last Friday, hinting that investors were not confident of market holding up at higher levels. (This article is also covered by Economic Times , in the Mumbai newspaper edition of August 25th, 2015.)

Monday Mayhem 1

Analysis of data assimilated from over 1.5 million social media posts, of which over 90% are tweets, affirm that stock market sentiment is now at the lowest point. The sentiment heatmaps, created on the basis of data from social media posts, have gone from bad to worse over the past one week. Heatmaps suggest that markets could remain subdued over the next few days.

Monday Mayhem 2

All sectors except Pharma and Consumer will see selling whereas the latter two may see select buying according to trends suggested by the Heatmap.

Monday Mayhem 3

Since last monday August 17th,2015 there has been a 250% jump in ‘mentions’ (posts) about India’s stock market, 280% increase in posts about Asian crisis . A 116% surge in posts about Asian financial market and 100% increase in mentions about commodity prices. Such spikes alongwith the negative sentiment alerted Heckyl users of an imminent downtrend and a possible crisis.

It is yet to be seen how long this frenzy continues but we can detect quick turnaround in stocks by analysing its sentiment , from the impact of social media tweets and posts. Additionally when viewed in tandem with the price for a particular stock, you can also find insight on news around stocks within your portfolio by simply observing the sentiment graph, that should move hand in hand along with the price.

Through our earlier blog posts we have explained how a streaming analysis of tweets offers us updates that can help us feel the market pulse in real-time.
